AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK:The park lies on the low altitude on the boarder of Tanzania, is more different to the breezy cultivated hills that characterize Rwanda. It is mostly dominated by labyrinth of swamps and lakes that follow the meandering Akagera River, the most remote source of the Nile. African savannah landscape of tangled acacia woodland interspersed with open grassland.
The land scape allows panoramic vista of hills as well as game of herds of elephant, and buffalos emerge from the wood land to drink at the lakes. Lucky visitors could spot a leopard spotted hyena or even a stay lion. Giraffe and Zebra haunt the savannah, others like dozen of antelopes inhabit the park of mostly Impala, Oribi, secretive bush buck and as well as the tsessebe, not to miss the world’s largest antelope, the statuesque cape eland.
A camping safari along the lakes of Akgeri with morning and evening cup of tea, introduces one to the wonders of African bush, pods of hippopotamus grunt and splutter through out the day, while out sized crocodiles soak up the sun with their vast jaws. Magically the air is torn apart by the unforgettable high duetting of a pair of fish eagles, while in the connecting marghes are the haunt of the endangered and exquisite papyrus gonolek, on the bizarre shoebill stork- the latter perhaps the most eagerly sought of all birds in Africa.
NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK: Nyungwe National Park one of the largest block mountain forest in East , Central, Africa extending for 1,000sq.km across the majestic hills of South East Rwanda. The unique forest is abundant with flora diversity with 200 different types of trees, flowering plants, including giant Lobelia and a host of colorful orchids. There are 13 species of primates in this park including human closest living relatives the Chimpanzees, handsome Lhoest Monkey, hundreds of delightfully acrobatic Angola colobus, for birders, this is a home to 300 species of birds, 25 of them endemic to the Albertine Rift. Kivu grand is the most famous and only found here. The great blue, red and green turaco bird which streams from tree to tree.
Walking trails have been put in place to allow easy movements for searchers through the forest to various water falls and viewing points.
Comfortable rest accommodation and camp sites lie along the main road; the reserve can also be visited as a day trip from the towns of Butare and Cyangugu. 3 days trip to Nyungwe will enable one to view varieties of different primate species including chimpanzees and birds.
